A Retrospective Follow - up Study of Adolescent Eyesight

Abstract
This study has been performed to analyze longterm trend of eyesights of school students in Seoul. In this study, 138 sophomore male students and the same year 127 femate students in a junior high school were selected as subjects, and their eyesights measured on the students¢¥ annual health chart have been followed up for four years-The results are as follows:
1.Initial sights are relatively good, when measured on the 3rd grade of elementary school;More than half the students have fairly good sights higher 1.0, and fewer than 7% are lower than 0.
2.But when the sights were measured again after 4 years, about half the subjects of those at 1.0 or hogher are below 0.7, and more than 10% of those at 1.0 or higher are below 0. This result indicates that Korean adolescent students are exposed to significant environmental forces aggravating eyesights.
3.There is a significant gender difference in degree of aggravation;higher proportion of the female students underwent worsening than male students, indicating that female students are more exposed to habitual elements such as longer reading timc, closer visual contancts with TV or computer monitors, and less controlled lighting. Therefore in this study. Gender-differentiated school health education policy is strongly recommended
